A group of friends and family united by their passion for all well-crafted things. Willie and Duro, both long-time craft beer enthusiasts, started their home brewing adventures six years ago. A love of fantasy fiction and medieval history/culture inspired them to try other fermentations, and so began the quest for mead. The rest of the companions are devoting their time and talents in other key areas, as well as learning to make mead themselves. Every partner has something they specialize in. Julie, a graduate of LVC, is our financial taskmaster, making sure we stay on budget. Jeanette is our party and event planner, skills she learned while working at the Lancaster IU13. Alfonso is a jack-of-all-trades that can build or wire anything. Together we have the skills and expertise to succeed.
What is Meduseld? Meduseld is a word from Olde English (it ain't old enough until you add that extra 'e'), which when translated to modern English means Mead Hall. Tolkien, who would never let a good name go to waste, borrowed it for the name of King Theoden's Hall in The Lord of The Rings. Back in the day, a mead hall is where everything important happened in a given community. Celebrations, battle or raid season planning, weddings and wakes all took place in the mead hall. Our mead hall will be a welcoming place where we can explore the amazing versatility of mead, a place where you can redefine your traditions.
Our Location An old tobacco warehouse built near the turn of the last century provides our space with great wooden floors and beams. We make mead in the basement, and teach classes on how to do so as well. Our small part of the first floor will serve as our mead hall...it's even hall shaped! The surrounding area has seen lots of small business call it home, and it continues to attract that sort of growth. The Lancaster Arts Hotel is right across the street, as well as The Fridge. Our parking is across the street, next to the Lancaster YMCA proper. It is a stone covered parking lot that has room for sixty vehicles. The entire building is handicapped accessible through wheel chair lifts and an elevator.
What is Mead? Mead is an alcoholic beverage that is made while fermenting honey by mixing honey, water, and yeast. The beverage is usually thought of as being sweet much like the honey it is made with but this would only be half correct. Mead can take on the characteristics of a wine, beer, champagne, and can even be distilled into a liquor. It can be any where from very sweet to very dry and can be flavored with just about anything imaginable, even hops. We make a Rauch mead made with smoked sweet potatoes, wild flower honey and fall spices that is out of this world!! Our hope is to make a lasting impression on your taste buds no matter what your preference is.
